RESULTS

A celebrated outcome of Project Pioneer is the linkage between ecological health and profitability. More than 150 producers are living proof it is possible to improve the ecological health of a property, while also increasing production efficiency and boosting profitability.

There is a common perception in agriculture, ‘you can’t be green while you’re in the red’, and this is a motto Project Pioneer subscribes to, which is why the project is business-driven in its approach to sustainability.

Producers who are enrolled in Project Pioneer have reaped the benefit of:

  • Enhanced financial literacy and improved profitability
  • The implementation of better farm management systems
  • The ability to measure and monitor ground cover and soil health
  • Measurably improved herd performance and production efficiency
  • The knowledge they are actively contributing to the health and preservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

With these fundamentals achieved, farmers in the project have reported that despite experiencing the worst drought in memory, they are the least stressed they have ever been. This is the result of farmers building skills and tools to stay in control of their operation.
